Italian Marengo
History of Marengo:
The Italian Marengo was minted between 1803 to 1815 in the Subalpine Republic to celebrate the victory of Napoleon on the Austrian troops in Spinetta Marengo (near Alessandria); this coin is also known as “Napoleon” and its value is equivalent to 20 francs.
It turned out to be very popular and widely used, in fact, following the establishment of the Latin Monetary Union, the other coins belonging to the Union and with the same value, were named after the Italian Marengo, like for example the 20 Italian lira.
Description:
On the obverse of the coin there is the King Victor Emmanuel II and under his neck the date and the engraver’s name.
On the reverse, the depiction of the Savoy Coat of Arms framed by the Collar of the Annunziata with laurel branches. At the bottom of the coin, its value and the Mint mark.
