Swiss Marengo
History of Marengo:
The Swiss Marengo of 20 francs was minted between 1871 and 1949; the version shown in the picture is called Vreneli. It was engraved by Fritz Ulysse Landry (1842-1927).
Many samples of this coin were minted with the gold extracted from Gondo mines, and they are characterized by the presence of a small cross inside a Swiss cross.
Description:
On the obverse of the coin there is the image of a woman in profile with braids and a necklace made of flowers (Vreneli). On the background some mountains are visible. On top, the caption HELVETIA; on the right side at the bottom there is the engraver’s signature, Fritz Landry.
On the reverse is engraved the Swiss Coat of Arms framed by oak branches and the money value; on the bottom the date and the Mint mark.
